Record-setting 85% of total smartphone shipments belong to Android.
According to the WSS (Wireless Smartphone Strategies, STRATEGY ANALYTICS), in the second quarter of 2014 smartphone shipments reached 295 million units. Indeed, the Android operating system has set a new record, taking 85 percent of the market-wide, largely due to BlackBerry, Apple iOS and Microsoft Windows Phone shipment results.
Global smartphone shipments enjoyed the growth of 27% to 233 million units in the second quarter of 2013 in contrast to 295.2 million in the second quarter of 2014 in line, and together with the WSS estimates, worldwide buyers interest growth in smartphones fell by half, from 49 percent last year to 27 per cent for now. Global growth of interest in smartphones in the current quarter is at its lowest level over the last five years. In addition, there are large differences between regions. For example, in Africa and Asia, as opposed to North America and Europe, the interest in smartphones is growing rapidly.
Android position in global smartphone shipments has reached a new peak in the second quarter of 2014, resulting in 85 % of market share dominance.
Android strengthening happened to the detriment of all major platforms rivals. BlackBerry has faced a decrease in its own market share from 2 percent to 1 percent last year due to its weak line of devices BB10. Apple iOS Android conceded one point because of its limited presence in the lower segment of the smartphone market. Microsoft Windows Phone encountered difficulties in the United States and China; besides, its global presence proportion in the smartphone market fell from 4 % in the second quarter of 2013 to 3 % in the second quarter of 2014.
As it once happened to the PC market, Android is on the verge of turning the situation into the one-man show. Its low-cost services as well as user-friendly software stay extremely attractive for equipment manufacturers, operators and consumers around the world.
OS producing competitors need to rectify the situation. There are only two things to threat further increase of Android presence in the market share: Apple big screen phablet appearance in the market, and Firefox promotion further to the ultra-low price smartphone category market.
